Desk comparison: this article compares South African manufacturer listings and campaign information; it is not a road test. Prices, promotions and specifications can change—confirm the exact derivative and on-the-road quote with a dealer.
Two small hatchbacks can appear in the same shopping tab for a reason: the current Toyota Starlet and Suzuki Baleno both pair a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 77 kW and 138 Nm, and each range offers a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. The useful question is therefore not which badge is “quicker” on paper, but which derivative, equipment mix and deal fit your week. Toyota’s Starlet page and Suzuki’s local Baleno specifications are the starting point for any quote comparison.
Start with the actual money
Toyota’s South African range page lists the Starlet from R273,700 at the time of writing. Suzuki’s current Baleno promotion lists the 1.5 GL manual at R269,900, a R3,800 gap before dealer-installed items, finance terms, insurance and fees. That Suzuki promotion is marked as valid until 30 November 2026 and while stocks last, so do not treat it as a permanent list price. Check Toyota’s live range pricing and Suzuki’s campaign terms on the day you shop.
Like-for-like is the rule
Both manufacturers quote 77 kW at 6,000 r/min and 138 Nm at 4,400 r/min for their 1.5-litre cars. Toyota quotes 5.4 L/100 km for its manual Starlet models and 5.7 L/100 km for the automatic; its current XR automatic comparator is listed with the four-speed automatic and a 5.7 L/100 km average. Suzuki’s table likewise lists the five-speed manual and four-speed automatic across GL and GLX grades. Those are manufacturer figures, not a promise of your commute’s consumption.
The sensible shortlist is therefore manual against manual, and automatic against automatic. Ask each dealer for a written quotation that names the derivative, paint charge, service plan or warranty additions, delivery fee, finance interest rate and balloon amount. A lower instalment can still mean a higher total cost of credit.
Equipment: read the trim line, not the headline
Suzuki’s current spec table gives every listed Baleno derivative ABS with EBD, brake assist, ESP, six airbags and ISOFIX with a child-seat tether. It also shows a clear GL/GLX split: GLX brings LED projector headlamps, a 9-inch infotainment screen and a 360-degree camera, while the GL is listed with a 7-inch screen and rear-view camera. Read the full Baleno derivative table.
Toyota highlights six airbags, Vehicle Stability Control, rear park distance control, smartphone connectivity and convenience features such as a reverse camera, cruise control and push-start on selected models. Treat “selected models” literally: get the dealer to show the specification sheet for the exact Starlet code being quoted rather than assuming a feature on an XR automatic is included in the entry car. Toyota’s Starlet model page is explicit about that qualification.
Where each makes more sense
- Choose the exact Baleno deal if the GL manual’s current entry price works for your budget, or if you value the GLX’s listed 360-degree camera and larger screen. Compare the promotion’s warranty wording and finance conditions with the dealer’s written offer.
- Choose the exact Starlet deal if the Toyota dealer’s total ownership package, availability, trade-in offer or the selected-model feature set is stronger in your area. Do not decide from the badge alone: its current published starting price sits close to the promoted Baleno GL manual.
- For either car, take a child seat if you use one, test visibility and rear-seat access, and drive the same transmission type you intend to buy. Confirm the VIN-linked specification, included service/warranty cover and all finance numbers before signing.
The Vroom Africa verdict
This is a comparison where disciplined quoting matters more than broad brochure claims. The Starlet and Baleno share very similar headline hardware, so the better purchase is the specific local derivative that gives you the equipment, total deal and support you need. Begin with the current R3,800 advertised entry-price difference, then make the decision only after you have matched transmission, safety equipment, camera/infotainment features and contract terms line by line.
