BMW has expanded the M2 line-up with its first all-wheel-drive version, pairing the compact coupé’s 480 hp straight-six with the company’s rear-biased M xDrive system.
The new BMW M2 with M xDrive is designed to add traction without erasing the playful character that made the smallest full-fat M car a favourite among enthusiasts. In normal driving, power is sent to the rear wheels. The front axle joins in when the rear tyres can no longer deploy the engine’s output effectively, while an Active M Differential continuously manages torque between the rear wheels.
Quicker off the line
With all four tyres contributing to the launch, the M2 now reaches 100 km/h from rest in 3.7 seconds—three-tenths quicker than the rear-wheel-drive model. BMW quotes 12.8 seconds for 0–200 km/h. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, or 285 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.
The power source remains a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 353 kW (480 hp), matched as standard to an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The car rides on staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, with track-focused tyres available as an option. Six-piston front brake calipers form part of the standard M Compound braking system.
All-wheel drive, with an off switch
BMW has retained a 2WD setting within the M Setup menu. With stability control switched off, the mode disconnects the front axle and sends all torque to the rear wheels. That gives drivers the security of all-wheel drive in poor weather and the option of a more traditional rear-driven experience on a circuit.
The M2 also introduces BMW M Ignite, a patented pre-chamber combustion system derived from racing technology. BMW says it reduces fuel consumption when the engine is working under high loads and helps the straight-six meet EU7 requirements. The technology is due to spread across BMW M’s six-cylinder engines from mid-2026.
Visually, the M2’s compact, muscular shape remains familiar, though the colour catalogue grows to include BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue for the first time on the model. Buyers can choose from five metallic, three solid and six BMW Individual finishes.
Production is scheduled to begin at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico in August 2026, followed by a late-summer market launch. BMW says the United States, Germany and China will be the car’s most important markets. Pricing will be announced locally.
