A No-Rush Accra-to-Aburi Day: Make the Drive Part of the Break

A one-stop day out is often better than a race through every attraction. This is a planning guide, not a live traffic report: check the route, weather and venue arrangements on the morning you travel.

Aburi works best when the car is a way to slow the day down, not a reason to turn it into a checklist. Ghana Statistical Service recorded Aburi Botanical Gardens as the most-visited tourist site by domestic same-day visitors in its 2023 survey, with 11,586 visits across the year. That is a good reason to make one calm base—rather than attempting Aburi, Peduase, a craft stop and a distant waterfall in the same short window. The simple promise: leave enough room for the uphill drive, one unhurried walk, one meal or picnic pause, and a daylight return. Everything else is optional.

Build the day around one anchor

Make the gardens the anchor. The Akuapim South Municipal Assembly lists Aburi Gardens, the Craft Village and Peduase Lodge among the area’s visitor points, so they are useful choices for a short add-on—not obligations to collect. Pick one after the gardens only if the group still has time and energy. Akuapim South Municipal Assembly tourism page.

A practical rhythm is: arrive with a full water bottle and a charged phone; walk first while everyone is fresh; pause for lunch; then decide whether a second stop adds pleasure or simply makes the return stressful. Families with young children and anyone travelling with older relatives will usually enjoy the day more if that last decision stays flexible.

Treat the road as part of the plan

Do not turn an old travel-time estimate into a promise. The Ghana Highway Authority’s project listing includes 19.3 km of upgrading for the Aburi–Oyibi and Peduase/Aburi community roads; project lists are useful context, but they are not a same-day conditions bulletin. Look for current works, rain and congestion before leaving, then give the group a generous arrival window. Ghana Highway Authority project listing.

Before departure, do the unglamorous five-minute check: fuel level, tyre condition and pressure, washer fluid, lights, phone charge and the spare-wheel or repair-kit situation. Ghana’s National Road Safety Authority says the public should seek an NRSA-accredited tyre centre for tyre care, and notes that calibrated equipment is part of accreditation. Keep the return easy

Decide the return trigger before the day gets busy: for example, “we leave after lunch” or “we leave while there is still comfortable daylight.” That small agreement prevents a nice garden visit becoming a tired, late drive. Keep sunglasses and water handy; if visibility drops in dust or rain, slow down, increase following distance and avoid rushed overtakes. The NRSA specifically advises adapting speed to low visibility, keeping distance, using lights where needed, and avoiding unnecessary overtaking. NRSA seasonal road-safety advice.

If a vehicle stops in an unsafe place, prioritise getting people out of danger and follow the authority’s warning-triangle guidance; its published advice is to place a triangle at least 45 metres away. Do not attempt roadside repairs on a live road simply to rescue the day’s schedule. NRSA seasonal road-safety advice.

The better kind of Aburi day

The strongest version of this drive is deliberately modest: one green place, one good pause, one possible extra stop and a calm journey home. It gives the driver a real break too—and leaves something for the next visit.
